Norbeck Society Outings Summer 2010 - Spring 2011 ~ Everyone Always Welcome ~ 2010 June 12 Annual Elaine Ebbert Botanical Wonder-Crawl & Picnic Join a celebration of a wonder-filled life, of incredible people (that’s you), and the wonders of nature, great and small. Aug. 28 Wind Cave (the backcountry) The buffalo rut could provide some excitement – bring binoculars – we don’t want to be part of the action. Oct. 2 Red Shirt Wilderness There are currently no grassland wilderness areas in the U.S. Three areas in South Dakota have been proposed as wilderness. Come see why this is the jewel of the three. Dec. 18 Steamboat Rock (post-hike fireside potluck) This is short but steep – fantastic views – time to relax after. 2011 May 21 Bear Butte Enjoy early spring blooms at this lower elevation. June 25 Annual Elaine Ebbert Botanical Wonder-Crawl & Potluck Picnic Join a celebration of a wonder-filled life, of incredible people (that’s you), and the wonders of nature, great and small. · Participants must preregister. Contact: Mark (or Mary) Zimmerman at mzimmerman@norbecksociety.com or (605) 342-2552. · Participants are required to sign a liability waiver. · Participants may be prohibited from going on an outing if an outing coordinator believes they do not have the physical ability and/or equipment to enable them to safely complete the outing. · Outings are instigated – not led. We’re all on our own together. · The wilderness (thankfully) remains a guarantee-free zone.
. A personal note: this will be hike number 48 of 50 for this Norbeck Society Outings Instigator. The potlucks at our ranch after this and after the Elaine Ebbert Botanical Wonder-Crawl (my last outing as an instigator), are a way of saying thank you, to you. It came as a surprise; it has been people, most amazing people, who have made these outings so incredible. Many whose acquaintance I first made on a Norbeck Outing now are counted among my most cherished friends. It is certainly with mixed emotions that this post is abandoned. I heartily recommend the opportunity opening soon. Somebody, maybe you, has a rich and rewarding experience ahead. It is time for both new blood in this position and for someone to take (at least) a good long break. I hope to sign up for an outing you’ve instigated soon. For those of you who have enjoyed the writing and photography in these announcements, you can continue the enjoyment by becoming a follower of a new blog, Green Ink Seen, at http://greeninkseen.blogspot.com Happy trails ~ Mark
